Composition Shingles
Composition shingles, also known as asphalt composition shingles or just "comp" are used on nearly 80% of the residential roofs in Sonoma County.
The basic construction of the composition shingle is a fiberglass mat at the core with an exterior asphalt coating embedded with crushed rock (colored granules). There are many different styles and grades to choose from. The most widely used are called “architectural” or “dimensional”. These come with a 40 or 50 year product warranty. The difference between the grades of shingles is the amount of asphalt used. More asphalt makes a heavier shingle which equates to a longer life.
A step up from the architectural shingles are the designer shingles. These come in many different styles and thicknesses to emulate wood shingles, wood shakes, tile, slate and other designs. Because of the price premium that accompany these composition shingles they are usually reserved for composition roofing on custom built houses. They typically carry a 50 year product warranty.
